We all know that the Father is God. In Ephesians 1:17, Paul prays to the God of our Lord Jesus Christ.
In Ephesians 4:6 it speaks of "one God and Father of all". Paul's prayer in Philippians 1:2 also indicates
that God is the Father.
The Bible also tells us that the Son Jesus is God. John 10:30 puts it simply by saying
"I and My Father are one." In Matthew 1:23 we see the virgin Mary bearing a child whose name shall be called
Immanuel meaning "God with us". In Hebrews 1:8 it's addressed to Jesus and says, "Your throne, O God, is
forever and ever." John 1:1-2 we see that the Word (which is Christ) was there from the beginning and the
Word was God and the Word was with God. Then in John 1:14 we see that the Word became flesh or became
Jesus and dwelt among us. Jesus was God manifested in the flesh as seen in 1 Timothy 3:16. In John 20:28
after Christ's resurrection, we see Thomas saying to Him, "My Lord and my God." In Romans 9:5 we see the
ascended Jesus described as "who is over all, the eternally blessed God." 1 John 5:20 tells us that He
is the true God and eternal life. Philippians 2:5-7 tells of Jesus being in the form of God.
Colossians 1:15 tells of Jesus in the image of God. Colossians 2:9-10 speaks of Jesus having the fullness
of the Godhead. Titus 2:13 speaks of Jesus as our great God and Savior. Isaiah 9:6 tells us Jesus name
would be called Mighty God and everlasting Father. Isaiah 7:14 and Matthew 1:23 tells about Mary bearing
a son whose name shall be called Immanuel meaning "God with us". 2 Peter 1:1 addresses Jesus as "Our God
and Savior Jesus Christ." In Revelation 5:11-14 and Philippians 2:9-10 we see that Jesus receives
the same worship in heaven and on earth as does God the Father.
Jesus is easier to understand than the Holy Spirit because He came to earth as a person with
a human body sharing human experiences like us that we can relate to, but the Holy Spirit is different. The Holy
Spirit is not a force but is a "He" as John 14:26 tells us. He
never had a human body and lives in a different dimension than we're familiar with but yet we still find
Him spoken of in personal terms throughout scripture. Some of the verbs used to describe the Holy Spirit's
activities are the Holy Spirit convicts, guides, tells, brings, hears, speaks, reasons, thinks, understands, wills, feels, makes them known, appoints,
bears witness, helps, intercedes, searches, knows, teaches, lives, washes, sanctifies, justifies, gives,
cries out, leads, desires, strengthens, is grieved, can be blasphemed, and lied to. The Holy Spirit has
intelligence, has feelings that can be grieved, made sad or joyful, and has a will as deciding the gifts
He gives to His people 1 Corinthians 12:11. In John 16:7 Jesus told the disciples that it's better that
He go away or else the Helper or Holy Spirit would not come to them meaning that the Holy Spirit must at
least have the personal qualities that Jesus had.
The Holy Spirits name itself is an indication of its divine position in the Trinity. The Holy Spirit has
always been around since the beginning of time as Genesis 1:2 tells us. In the Old Testament it was God
who was the source of life in all living things and in the New Testament it is the Holy Spirit who is the
Spirit of life because He is the Spirit of God Romans 8:2 and 2 Corinthians 3:6. Jesus spoke of the Spirit
as the "Holy" Spirit and later addressed God as "Holy" Father in John 17:11. Jesus was also called the
"Holy" One in Acts 3:13-14. He is often referred to as "The Spirit of God" in both the Old and New
Testament. In Acts 5:3-4 Ananias who lied to the Holy Spirit was told by Peter that he was lying to God.
In Matthew 28:19, the disciples are told to baptize in the name of the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 6:11
speaks of being justified by the Spirit of our God. In 1 Corinthians 12 you can see the subject change
from using "God" in verse 6 to the "Spirit" in verse 11. In the Old Testament, the temple building
signified the place where God lived among His people and in the New Testament the believer is the temple
of God and signifies the place where the Holy Spirit lives in His people 1 Corinthians 3:16 and
Ephesians 2:21-22.
